Description
The Uppingham School Science Block and Victoria Tower, built in 1897 and the early 20th century, is designed in the Jacobean style. It is constructed of coursed rubble with a slate roof and features a massive ridge stack. The building has a central tower flanked by two two-storey wings. The eastern wing has two shaped and coped gables, along with a larger projecting gable at the east end. The western wing includes a 20th-century addition that reflects the eastern wing's design but lacks the projecting gable and is treated more simply. There is a string course between the storeys, and the windows are mullioned and transomed, with some in the eastern wing featuring arched heads. The ground floor windows of the eastern wing have relieving arches. The south side of the eastern wing has two smaller gables and two gabled projections. The south side of the western wing presents a separate composition, with rectangular mullioned windows of various sizes symmetrically arranged around a central four-centred entrance arch.
The tower consists of four stages, separated by string courses, and has an octagonal stair turret at the northwest corner. The central vaulted carriageway has a four-centred arch. The first stage features a seven-light window, with the three central lights curved into an oriel, which supports an aedicule containing a statue of Archdeacon Johnson, the founder of the school, at the second stage level, flanked by two-light windows. The third stage has a semi-dome over the aedicule and two tall two-light cusped-headed windows with transoms. Gargoyles and a parapet are located above. This building forms one side of a quadrangle that is completed by New School House and the School Room.
