SP 8699-8799 UPPINGHAM 4/11 Uppingham School, Science Block and Victoria Tower GV II

Science block and tower, 1897 and early C20. Of coursed rubble with slate roof and massive ridge stack. Jacobean style. Central tower flanked by 2 two-storey wings, that to the east with 2 shaped and coped gables and a similar but larger projecting gable at the east end, and that to the west a C20 addition reflecting the former but lacking the projecting gable at the end, and treated more simply. String course between storeys. Mullioned and transomed windows, some to east wing with arched heads. Relieving arches to ground floor windows of east wing. South side of east wing has 2 smaller gables and 2 gabled projections. South side of west wing forms separate composition, with rectangular mullioned window of various sizes disposed symmetrically about a central 4-centred entrance arch. Tower of 4 stages, divided by string courses, with octagonal stair turret at NW corner. Four-centred arched central vaulted carriageway. First stage has 7-light window, the 3 central lights curved into oriel and forming base for aedicule containing statue of Archdeacon Johnson, founder of the school, at second stage level, flanked by 2-light windows. Third stage has semi-dome over aedicule, and 2 tall 2-light cusped-headed windows with transoms. Gargoyles and parapet above. Forms one side of quadrangle completed by New School House and School Room (qq.v.).
