Description

The Village School, dating from 1863, was built in the Gothic style and enlarged in 1899. It is constructed of rubble stone with stone dressings and has a gabled stone tiled roof, with three stone stacks. The building is arranged with the school hall at a right angle to the road, with a gable at the end featuring a bellcote and combined chimney stack. Adjoining to the east is the schoolmaster’s house. A further single-story gabled range extends to the west, representing the 1899 addition. The main hall has a three-cusped light window, and the gable end of the schoolmaster’s house has a similar three-cusped light window. The central range is two stories high and features mullioned windows with two and three lights. The schoolroom entrance has a ledged door with wrought iron hinges under a depressed pointed arch. A similar door, with simpler ironwork, provides access to the schoolmaster’s house. The bellcote has a trefoiled opening and a triangular gable with a finial. A catslide roof extends over the rear single-story ranges.
