Description

Oakwood House and The Close are two dwellings that originated in the early 19th century as a vicarage. A further bay was added to the east side in the mid-19th century. The original vicarage section extends for three bays, while The Close occupies the fourth bay and the later one-bay extension.

The original part is constructed of rubble stone, rendered with a lime wash, and has a shallow hipped slate roof with two brick stacks, one resting on a stone base at the west end. The later addition is of rubble stone with brick window surrounds and also has a slate roof. The north front features four bays, evenly spaced, with four-pane sashes throughout. A string course runs along the first floor. A gabled, rendered porch with a slate roof shelters a four-panelled door with two glazed lights. The two-storey, one-bay east addition also has four-pane sashes.

At the rear, deep projecting eaves are a feature of both facades. A south-west bow contains reeded architraves with stopped roundels and panelled shutters to the ground floor sash windows, with similar architraves to the doors. A cantilevered staircase has a mahogany handrail, thin squared balusters, and carved tread-ends.
