Description

The Uppingham School School Room, built between 1861 and 1863 by G.E. Street, is a notable example of Gothic Revival architecture. Constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, it features a slate roof with coped gables and decorative ridge tiles.

This two-storey building consists of a long range with one school room above the ground floor, which is divided into classrooms and an open loggia. The east front is marked by a gabled staircase projection that includes two two-light windows with plate tracery and a cusped oculus above. The ground floor classrooms are illuminated by pairs of rectangular windows designed to resemble lancets, flanked and separated by small columns with subtly varied stiff leaf capitals and carved bosses above, all enclosed within arches. The four-bay arched loggia is supported by stocky cylindrical columns, and there are buttresses at the north corner.

On the first floor, the windows are pairs of lancets inspired by Oakham Castle, divided by columns and adorned with nail-head decoration. The north end features a five-light window with unique plate tracery. The west front has a prominently designed external stair with a segmental soffit and a massive corbel leading to the upper level of a two-storey porch. The windows on the west front are treated more simply than those on the east, with ground floor windows being rectangular, chamfered, and featuring moulded stops, while the first-floor windows resemble those on the east front but lack nail-head decoration. The building also includes rainwater heads, one with blind tracery and two dated 1861, and a tall lateral stack at the south end. It forms one side of a quadrangle, which is completed by the New School House and Science Block.
