Description

The Former Barclays Bank, located at No. 10 Horsefair Street, was built around 1900-1910 and designed by architect E. Sawday. It is constructed in a mannered classical style using ashlar stone and features a slate roof and a polished granite plinth. The building has a heavy modillion cornice and a parapet that is partly balustered.

The structure stands three storeys tall and has three windows across its façade. The ground floor is distinguished by a moulded cornice and two windows framed in Gibb's surrounds, which are adorned with large keyblocks. To the right, there is an Ionic pilastered doorway topped with an open curved pediment that contains carved figures and a large keyblock above the round-arch doorway. The first and second floors are set in a slight recess and feature three-light windows flanked by Tuscan three-quarter columns, with the second floor showcasing rusticated columns. The ends of the first and second floors have wide rusticated flat pilasters surrounding the windows; the first floor windows are topped with pediments that include very large keyblocks, while the second floor windows are set within elliptical arches.

The elevation facing Town Hall Square is similar in style but wider, featuring small gables with pedimented heads over the end bays. The building is capped with large chimney stacks that have cornices and pulvinated friezes.

The Former Barclays Bank is part of a group of listed buildings that includes Nos 6-8, The Royal Hotel, Nos 17, 19, and 21, along with The Town Hall, Fountain, and War Memorial, all of which surround Town Hall Square.
