Description
The National Westminster Bank, located at 49 South Street, was built in 1899 or 1900. It is constructed from ashlar Bath stone and features two storeys with attics. The building has continuous moulded sill courses and a plain band above the first floor. A heavy modillion eaves cornice with a parapet is present at the top.
The façade consists of five bays, with the four outer bays projecting forward and topped with modillion pediments. These pediments include yeux-de-boeuf windows and elaborate sculpted tympana. The central entrance features a door with six large fielded panels, a semi-circular fanlight, and moulded imposts adorned with egg-and-dart moulding. The door is flanked by two blocked Ionic three-quarter columns that support a pulvinated frieze, a dentilled cornice, and a broken segmental pediment. This pediment encloses a die with a moulded cornice and a vase on top.
On the ground floor, the four windows have plate glass and are framed by moulded and blocked architraves with triple keystones. The central window has a flat moulded cornice, while the outer four windows feature moulded cornices that rise segmentally in the centre. The building also has contemporary iron railings and downpipes at either end. Nos 49, 50, and 50A form a group.
