Description
The Town Hall is a Grade II* listed building located on Town Hall Square, constructed between 1874 and 1876 by architect F.J. Hames. This large, detached structure features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a second attic in the center. It is built of red brick with yellow stone dressings and has tiled roofs, with the central section rising under hipped roofs.
The building is seventeen window bays wide, with all windows being sashes set in moulded stone architraves. The central section and the ends project slightly, with the center featuring an ornate pedimental gable in stone. The ground floor has a round-arch entrance and a balcony above, supported by large stone brackets. The wings include attics with pedimental gables that have circular lights. There is a stone segmental pedimented chimney, and a tall clock tower at the north end, made of brick with a stone clock face stage that has pediments over the clock faces, topped with a cupola.
The Town Hall, along with the Fountain and War Memorial Square, Horsefair Street, and all listed buildings in Bishop Street, form a cohesive group.
