Description

No. 8 Bowling Green Street is a building dated 1865, designed in the Gothic style. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a steep-pitched slate roof with crenellated chimney stacks at both ends. The building is two storeys high.

The central section has a carved stone foliage eaves cornice and three windows. The first floor contains two-light Gothic pointed arch windows with plate tracery and shafts with carved capitals, along with a deep band at the first floor level. The ground floor has large four-light stone mullion and transom windows with cusped ogee-head lights, separated by a plain brick buttress.

To the left, there is a slight projection that is gabled and three storeys tall, featuring one window with two-light Gothic windows and cusped heads on the ground and second floors, as well as a carved tympanum on the first floor. To the right, there is another slight projection made of ashlar with a pyramidal roof. This section has a large high-pointed-arch entrance on the ground floor, adorned with carved mouldings and a double order of shafts, along with original doors that have richly carved panels of foliage. The first floor features a finely carved stone splayed bay window on moulded and carved corbels, with shouldered headed lights and additional carving between.

Above the bay window is a blind arch that contains the date and is decorated with crockets to the drip mould with a finial, flanked by cusped circular recesses. The area railings are missing, except for a heavy ornate cast-iron gate and piers located to the right of the entrance.
