Description
Alliance House, located at No 6 Bishop Street, was built between 1885 and 1888 and designed by architect E. Burgess. Originally a Liberal Club, the building features red brick with ashlar dressings and consists of six window bays. The ground floor has been completely altered, now featuring plate glass, polished granite, and a large fascia. Above, the window bays are divided by brick pilasters that support an entablature over the first and second floors, with stone mullion and transom windows set in moulded architraves. The first floor has a recessed three-bay arcaded balcony with a splayed bay window at the center and a balustrade. The steep-pitched tiled roof has two pyramid-shaped sections with finials, which are partly concealed by round-arched pilastered features that rise from the second-floor parapet. The building is included for its group value with other listed buildings in Bishop Street, as well as The Town Hall, Fountain, War Memorial, Town Hall Square, and The Royal Hotel.
