Description
The war memorial located at the northeast corner of Town Hall Square was built in the early 20th century to commemorate those who died in the Boer War. It was sculpted by Crosland McClure and features a low granite wall with bronze plaques listing the names of the deceased. At the center stands a squat pedestal topped with a bronze figure of a kneeling angel, depicted in flowing robes, holding a sword and an olive branch. Flanking the central pedestal are two slightly lower pedestals, each adorned with partly robed bronze female figures. This memorial is part of a group that includes the Town Hall, Fountain, and other listed buildings in Bishop Street.
