Description

The fountain in Town Hall Square was built in 1879 and designed by architect F.J. Hames, who also designed the Town Hall. It is made of cast iron on a stone base and features four large winged lions surrounding a central pedestal with Ionic columns. At the top, there is a shallow bowl with foliage decoration, from which rises a pilastered pedestal topped with a smaller bowl and a central fountain finial. The fountain is located in a circular pond at the center of Town Hall Square and was presented to the Borough by High Bailiff Israel Hart. The fountain, along with the Town Hall and War Memorial, contributes to the group of listed buildings in the area, including those on Horsefair Street and Bishop Street.
