Description

41 Friar Gate is a fine house built around 1770, designed by architect Joseph Pickford. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and stands three storeys tall, featuring five sash windows with moulded stone surrounds. The centre of the façade is recessed under a round-headed stone arch that spans all three storeys. Each side of the building projects forward, with one window on each side. The three first-storey windows have panels of balusters below them, while the central window also includes a frieze and cornice. The windows flanking the central arch have ornamental bands below their sills. The building is topped with a modillion cornice and an open pediment, which is adorned with three large ball-heads. The roof is covered with slates.

The entrance features a fine doorcase with sidelights, supported by Roman Doric engaged columns and plain pilasters. It includes a frieze with "dam" type ornament, a modillion pediment, a traceried fanlight, and a six-panelled door, accessed by five stone steps. Inside, there is a good entrance hall with Adam style plaster plaques and decoration, along with a notable Hopton Wood stone staircase that has a simple hardwood handrail. A rear ground-storey room contains a restored Adam style marble fireplace.

This building, along with Nos 27 to 32, the Friar Gate Railway Bridge, and Nos 35 to 39, as well as Nos 41 to 51, forms a group with No 47 Ford Street.
