Description

27 Friar Gate is a mid-18th century building constructed of red brick. It stands three storeys tall and features five sash windows. The two central windows have shaped stone surrounds, while the first-storey windows are adorned with pulvinated friezes and pediments. Stone bands and a plinth enhance the façade. The ground storey includes external shutters and a six-panelled door set in a Tuscan stone case, which is flanked by engaged columns and topped with a frieze and modillion cornice. A small modillion eaves cornice extends over the adjoining house. On the gable of the return side, there is a large openwork gilded rural clock face installed by a former owner. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 27 to 32, the Friar Gate Railway Bridge, and Nos 35 to 51 on the same street.
