Description
Nos 43 and 44 on Friar Gate are mid-18th century buildings made of red brick with stone dressings. They stand three storeys tall and feature five sash windows. The first storey is arcaded, with the central window adorned with a frieze and pediment. The ground storey includes two Venetian windows and a central doorway flanked by Roman Doric pilasters, topped with an open modillion pediment. Above the doorway is a traceried fanlight with a keyblock, and the door itself has six fielded panels. Access is via four stone steps. The buildings have a modillion eaves cornice and a small parapet, topped with an old tile roof. To the left, there is a recessed, three-storeyed wing with one window. These buildings are part of a group that includes Nos 27 to 32, the Friar Gate Railway Bridge, and Nos 35 to 39, as well as Nos 41 to 51, forming a cohesive architectural ensemble with No 47 on Ford Street.
