Description

The front range of farm buildings at Micklethwaite Farm, built around 1800 and now disused, consists of a stable-block and barracks. The structure is made of coursed, squared magnesian limestone with a roof of stone slate and pantiles. It is two storeys high and features a layout of 1:2:2:2:1 bays, with the ends and centre projecting. The building has a plinth and large quoins. The centre and end bays contain blind windows with projecting stone sills and flat arches, while the recessed bays have panels flanked by raised piers and small casements below a continuous first-floor band.

On the first floor, the centre windows have projecting sills and cemented flat arches, and the recessed bays each have inserted windows. The end bays feature short windows with projecting sills and flat arches. A central two-bay pediment includes an oculus in the tympanum and a round apex stack with a cornice, while the end bays have a moulded eaves cornice.

At the rear, external stone steps lead to a loft door in the right end bay, flanked by short original windows with projecting sills and flat arches. The centre block has a door flanked by windows on each floor and a pediment similar to the front. The bays on each side have been extended with later brickwork. The building was used as barracks in the 19th century and occupies a prominent position at the southern exit from Wetherby. The adjoining farm buildings are not of special interest.
