Description
Brunswick Yard, which houses the premises of Wetherby Workshops and C and S Racing, is a stable and coach-house built around 1820, with an addition made shortly after. It has been altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed from ashlar magnesian limestone and features a Welsh slate roof. It has a U-shaped plan and stands two storeys high, with a façade consisting of two, three, and two bays.
The right wing has a 20th-century panelled door, with plain casements on each floor that have projecting stone sills and flat arches. This wing has a hipped roof. The central range, which is set back, includes two carriage openings on the right, separated by a central stone pier and wooden lintels. To the left are two doorways with overlights and flat arches, while the first floor features three 20th-century casements with flat arches.
The left wing, which is of a later date and lower in height, has 20th-century garage doors beneath two blind windows with projecting sills and flat arches. There is an arch-braced iron crane in the first bay, and it also has a hipped roof. The right return of this wing features a blocked segmental arch to the left of external steps leading to a first-floor doorway.
The front yard is enclosed by a wall that is attached to each wing, with an opening to the right of centre flanked by wallstone piers. According to the 1824 Wetherby Sale catalogue, this building was described as 'new buildings' that included two box stables, space for two carriages, a four-stall stable, and a Posting House Stable for eight horses, along with granary and haylofts above. The left wing is not shown on the sale plan, which indicates these buildings were part of The Devonshire Arms, now known as The Brunswick at 22 High Street. Brunswick Yard is included for its group value with The Brunswick at High Street.
