Description

The Brunswick is a public house built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from ashlar magnesian limestone and features a Welsh slate roof. The building stands three storeys high and has a three-by-three bay layout, occupying a corner site with a right return facing Victoria Street.

At the base, there is a plinth. The doorway, located to the right of the centre, is framed by a fluted wooden doorcase and has a margin-glazed overlight set beneath a stone cornice supported by consoles. To the left of the door, there is a recessed apron panel and a projecting sill beneath a sash window with glazing bars, which is topped by a plain lintel. The first bay features a 16-pane sash window with a recessed apron panel and a flat arch, while the third bay has a sash window with glazing bars and a recessed apron panel, previously the location of a doorway.

On the first floor, there are projecting stone sills and flat arches above 16-pane sashes, with a dummy sash in the third bay. The second floor has 6-pane sashes with projecting sills and flat arches, along with a dummy sash in the third bay. The hipped roof is supported by paired wooden gutter brackets and has a brick stack located at the rear of the ridge.

On the right return, the central window was originally a doorway similar to the third bay at the front but retains the cornice on consoles. The other windows generally match those on the front. The building was shown as The Devonshire Arms on the 1824 Sale plan for Wetherby.
