Description

The farm buildings to the north of Meldon Park Farmhouse were built in 1809 and are designed as planned farm buildings with a mill. They are constructed from squared stone with dressings and have slate roofs. The buildings are single storey and arranged around a rectangular stable yard that is open to the south, featuring a tower at the north-west corner. The north range extends east as a cottage, while a barn runs north from the tower and connects with the mill.

The elevations facing the yard include the east range, which has double doors with a three-step mounting block to the left and a small projecting kennel block to the right. Low walls with chamfered coping support cast-iron rails. The north range features five stable doors, with the three central doors having three-pane overlights, and Yorkshire sash windows in between. The tower on the left is three storeys high, with slatted windows and a pyramidal roof that rises to a louvre. The west range has four stable doors, each with three-pane overlights. The southern ends of the east and west ranges have double doors set under segmental arches and coped open-pedimented gables.

The cottage is two storeys with two bays, featuring a flush-panelled door on the south side, a 20th-century casement to the right, and paired renewed 12-pane sashes in a half dormer above. There are stepped ashlar stacks at the ridge and at the right end. The barn is two storeys with four irregular bays and has been altered. The mill consists of a cross-wing that runs west from the north end of the barn and a block that runs north, built on a steep slope that descends towards the river. It includes a lower lean-to wheelhouse at the base of its tall north gable. The doorways have stop-chamfered alternating-block surrounds, and the cross-wing features an open-pedimented gable, while the main north gable has a circular window above a band.

Inside the mill, there is a wheelpit, millstones, and internal partitions. At the time of the survey, the mill section was derelict and partly ruinous. The range of farm buildings extending west from the tower has been significantly altered and is not of interest.
