Description

Meldon Park is a country house built in 1832 by John Dobson for Isaac Cookson, with some internal alterations made by Lutyens around 1930. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, except for the tooled and margined stone at the rear of the service wings, and it has slate roofs. The main block is rectangular and features parallel service wings to the north, which were truncated around 1960.

The entrance front has two storeys and three bays, with a moulded plinth, shallow angle pilasters, and a first-floor band. The central bay is slightly recessed and features a prostyle tetrastyle Ionic porch with two columns in antis at the rear wall. The windows are 12-pane sash windows set in architraves that extend down to the plinth or band. The ground-floor windows have cornices supported by richly-carved consoles. The eaves cornice is modillioned, and there is a parapet with a short central open balustrade over each bay. The hipped roof has two stepped and corniced stacks with quadruple shafts.

The south front has five bays, with the central bay being a full-height canted bay, and it features similar detailing. The east front also has five bays, with the central three slightly recessed, while the end bays have tripartite sashes. There is a lower service wing set back to the right, which links to a conservatory.

Inside, the decoration is restrained, with marble chimneypieces in most rooms. The imperial stair has been altered by Lutyens. Meldon Park is noted as "the last flowering of the Georgian country house tradition" and is considered perhaps the best example of Dobson's competence as an architect of country houses.
