Description
A group of farm buildings located to the north-west of High Barns Farmhouse, these structures were remodeled in the mid-19th century but incorporate early 18th-century elements. They are built from rubble with tooled-and-margined ashlar dressings and feature graduated Lakeland slate roofs. The layout is L-shaped, with the main block situated to the north and east of the yard, connected by a wall to a detached range on the west.
The north range is two storeys high and consists of four bays, featuring two pairs of segmental arches with four windows above and pigeon holes beneath the eaves. The left side of this range displays a pair of chamfered loops with a lancet window above. The east range is also two storeys but consists of just one bay, with a stable door set in a chamfered alternating-block surround and a part-slatted window to the right. The right side of this range has a boarded door and shows evidence of having been heightened from a steep 18th-century pitch. The rear elevation includes boarded doors, slit vents, and a slab with a circular opening for a drive shaft from a former gin-gang.
The west range is a single storey with two wide bays, featuring double doors under a segmental arch to the right and a boarded door in a chamfered alternating-block surround to the left, with a slit vent in between. The left side of this range shows a chamfered segmental arch with a lancet window in the gable above. These buildings are included for their group value. Attached sheds and outbuildings are not of interest.
