Description

The Town Farmhouse is a late 17th-century house, built on earlier foundations, with a rear wing dating to around 1800 and later 19th-century alterations. The exterior is of rubble construction with stone dressings, with a rendered front facade, and a stone slate roof. It has a front of two storeys and four slightly irregular bays. The front door, in the second bay, is renewed and half-glazed, within a moulded surround and flat-pointed head, topped with a hoodmould and the initials "W I" on the lintel. There is also a half-glazed door in a stop-chamfered surround to the right. Late 19th-century four-pane sash windows are present, with a larger stair window above the right-hand door. Coped gables feature moulded kneelers and finials, and the end stacks, one to the left, has been rebuilt in yellow brick on an old stone base. A ridge stack is also present. The right return shows a blocked attic window. The rear wing has a flush-panelled door and a 20-pane sash window to the left, alongside a 16-pane first-floor sash. A coped gable with a stepped stone stack is also visible.

Inside, there is a 19th-century staircase with closed strings, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. At the foot of the stairs is a moulded corbel from a former fireplace. A lintel with a flat-pointed moulded arch, originally from a fireplace, has been reset above the fireplace in the rear wing. A matching intact first-floor fireplace is located at the east end. The attic level contains a five-bay upper-cruck roof with collars, two levels of purlins, and a ridge.
