Description
The Church of St George is a church built in 1895 by Hicks and Charlewood, located in Wall Village. It is constructed from snecked stone with tooled-and-margined dressings and features buttresses, topped with a Lakeland slate roof. The church has a rectangular plan that includes a north-east organ chamber and is designed in the Perpendicular style, inspired by Beltingham St. Cuthbert.
The south elevation consists of six bays, featuring a moulded plinth and sill string, with stepped buttresses marking the bay divisions. Between the western bays, there is a vertical-panelled door set under a moulded three-centred arch within a square frame, complete with a hoodmould. The windows are composed of three trefoil-headed lights set under three-centred arches, each with its own hoodmould. The gables are coped and include moulded gabled kneelers. The east end of the church showcases a five-light panel-traceried window and a finial cross, while the west end displays a dated dedication stone with a cross fleury beneath a four-light window, along with a quatrefoil light above. A bellcote is present, featuring an ogee-headed opening beneath cross-gabled coping and a finial cross.
Inside, there is a double-chamfered arch leading to the organ chamber, a collar-beam roof supported by king-struts and carved braces, a built-in pulpit lectern, and a canopied rood beam with a cross and pendant tracery. The interior also includes a panelled dado and a carved font. The church is oriented north-south, following liturgical directions.
