Description
St Oswald’s Cottages is a terrace of three houses located on the north side of Wall Village. The buildings date from the 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century. The walls are built from rubble and feature dressings. The roofs are covered in Welsh slate, and there are rendered, stone, and brick stacks, including a left-hand stack with a rendered finish, a right-hand stack with a yellow brick dog-tooth cornice, and two ridge stacks, one stepped and one rendered.
The cottages are two storeys and six bays wide. The front elevations have two boarded doors within raised alternating-block surrounds, and one four-panel door in a moulded surround with a flattened triangular head, bearing the inscription “FEARE TK GOD 16 42 IN HART”. The windows have been renewed, but are set in 18th and 19th century openings. A blocked 17th century blocked window is visible to the right of the second door. Coped gables are present, with the left gable featuring a rendered stack.
The left return shows a blocked ground-floor slit, while the right return displays a blocked first-floor slit next to a window that was formerly a doorway, with an irregular stone surround.
The terrace is a probable example of a group of bastle houses, and at least two phases of 17th-century masonry are visible.
