Description

This barn, located approximately 10 metres west of Home Farm Farmhouse in Kippax, dates from the earlier 18th century and was built as part of Kippax Park home farm. It is constructed from magnesian limestone rubble with quoins and features a stone slate roof. The barn has a large rectangular plan with seven bays and is effectively double-depth due to the inclusion of stables and a byre on the south side, which is covered by the same roof.

The centre bay on the south side serves as a porch, leading to a segmental-headed wagon arch with double doors. This entrance is flanked by flights of stone steps made from hand-made brick that lead to loft doors. The stables and byre on either side each have two doors and two windows at ground floor level, along with three blocked square windows above.

The north side, which is the architectural front, features a slightly projected gabled centre bay with a round-headed wagon arch, impost bands, voussoirs, and a cruciform breather on each side, along with an oculus in the pediment. Slit breathers are present at ground floor level and cruciform breathers above. The roof is hipped, with a small opening for the dovecote located in the centre of the south side. A former cottage at the west end has been demolished.

Inside, there are nine queen-post roof trusses, and the centre bay is lofted with very large chamfered beams that support a lath and clay floor for the dovecote.
