Description
The former barn, located approximately 30 metres south-west of Low Hall Farmhouse, is an aisled barn that likely dates from the early 17th century and has been altered over time. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins and features a stone slate roof that is now coated with bitumen. The barn has a square plan with four bays arranged along a north-south axis, and it is aisled on both sides.
There are opposed wagon entrances in the third bay from the south end; the entrance on the east side has an altered lintel and a raised roof above it, while the entrance on the west side features a chamfered segmental-headed archway. The east side also includes a blocked doorway to the second bay with a wooden lintel, and another former doorway to the first bay has been altered to serve as a window. The south gable wall is adorned with numerous small square breathers and some slit breathers, along with worn moulded gable coping. A modern byre attached at the north end is not included in the listing.
Inside, the barn contains four frames with square aisle posts, the lower parts of which are now encased in concrete. These posts are braced to tie-beams and aisle-plates. The roof features king-post trusses with V-struts and longitudinal braces to the ridge, along with two pairs of purlins for the house and two for each aisle. The fourth frame is located in the present north gable wall, which has rubble filling and brick outer cladding, suggesting that a former fifth bay to the north has been removed.
