Description
Puritan Chapel is a historic chapel built in 1649, which has been altered and restored. It features coursed squared sandstone and a stone slate roof, with a rectangular plan oriented east-west. The building is one storey high and consists of five bays.
On the south side, the windows and doorways are arranged in a sequence of a - b - a - a - b - a. The doorways are segmental-headed with moulded surrounds, while the deeply-recessed windows have two, three, three, and three round-headed lights, complete with hollow spandrels and chamfered mullions. The wall on this side is finished with five courses of different masonry. The west gable wall includes a two-light window similar to those on the south side, along with a gable bellcote, which is likely from the 19th century. The east gable features a five-light window, and the north side has three two-light windows, with a single round-headed light positioned slightly above and to the left of the centre.
Inside, the chapel boasts four king-post roof trusses with V-struts and one pair of trenched purlins. It retains many original fittings, including panelled box pews, an octagonal pulpit with sounding boards, and wooden coat hooks on both side walls. There is also a small octagonal stone font on a three-stage pedestal and various wall monuments, including an arched recess near the east end of the north wall that contains an effigy of a recumbent female figure.
