Description
The Thorp Arch General Stores, along with a pair of cottages and adjoining shops, dates from the mid-19th century and was built for the Thorp Arch estate. The structure is made of coursed, squared magnesian limestone and features Welsh slate roofs. It is a two-storey, two-bay symmetrical pair with one-storey, one-bay side wings that house the shops. Each cottage has a four-panelled door with a plain overlight, situated next to 16-pane sash windows that have projecting stone sills and plain lintels. The eaves overhang, and there is a central yellow-brick ridge stack with six separate octagonal flues. The shop on the right wing has a part-glazed door with a blind overlight to the left of a large six-pane sash window, which is flanked by wooden side pilasters. The shop on the left wing features a similar door on the right side of a large eight-pane casement window topped with a wooden cornice, and it has an octagonal brick end stack on the left.
