Description

This is a range of mill buildings, including a kiln house and cottage, now incorporated into a factory. They were likely built in the late 18th century and early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of coursed magnesian limestone with stone slate and sheet asbestos roofs. The range is elongated, comprising three distinct sections. The sections are two, three, and four stories high, with window arrangements of 1:4:2 to the first floor.

The earliest section, on the left, features large quoins. It has a segmentally-arched doorway with an unglazed window to the right, and an old casement window with glazing bars above it. A large 20th-century casement window is present on the second floor, and a doorway on the right provides access to a bridge (which is not of special interest) connecting to Thorp Arch Mill. A casement window is positioned beneath the segmental arch on the third floor. Concrete steps against the left return wall provide access to upper-floor doorways.

The adjoining three-story range, set back on the right, has a part-glazed door and a four-pane sash window on the left, and a door with a margin-glazed overlight and a six-pane sash window on the right. The first floor features small, two-light horizontally-sliding sash windows with glazing bars, and an altered 16-pane sash window; 20th-century casement windows are found on the second floor.

The angled return on the right is a third range with a segmentally-arched door to the left, three casement windows, and another door on the right. The first floor has large, two-light casement windows, and external steps lead to a segmentally-arched door on the right. Two small casement windows are located on the second floor.

The basement of the four-story section has brick vaulting, and the roof contains pattern-book king-post trusses. Thorp Arch Mill was originally a rape-seed oil mill built in the late 17th century, and this range likely served its later use as a paper mill under the ownership of Kelita Kitchen. The third part of the range on the right is included for group value.
