Description
A smithy dating to the early 19th century, originally part of the Thorp Arch estate, now used as a plumber's store. The building is constructed of coursed, squared magnesian limestone, with a stone slate roof. It is a single-story structure, originally three bays long. The west side, away from the road, features a shoeing bay on the right with old boarded doors set under the eaves. To the left is a later brick chimney breast, incorporating a slot in the return (for heating wheel rims) and a small chimney shaft rising above the eaves. Further to the left is a two-light casement window with glazing bars, set beneath a flat arch. A stone stack is located on the left end, raised on a battered brick shaft. The roadside elevation is largely blank, with a central, blind door under a flat arch, and a blind window on the left with a projecting sill and flat arch. To the right is a three-light, horizontally-sliding sash window with glazing bars, set in a widened opening with a projecting sill and flat arch. The interior is said to retain its original hearth.
