Description

A pair of cottages dating from the mid-19th century were built as part of the Thorp Arch estate. They are constructed of squared, coursed magnesian limestone, with a Welsh slate roof. The cottages are two storeys and an attic, with two windows visible on the first floor, creating a symmetrical appearance. The cottage on the left has a panelled door with a plain overlight under a simple lintel, while to its right is a 16-pane sash window serving as a door, with a projecting stone sill and lintel. The adjacent "Rye Cottage" is similar in design but mirrored, and now possesses a 20th-century glazed door. Both cottages have similar first-floor sash windows. Oversailing eaves are present on the Rye Cottage, which also features a large 20th-century roof dormer. A central yellow-brick ridge stack, with a shared base from which six octagonal flues rise, is positioned between the two cottages. The right return of the cottages exhibits round-arched windows on both the first floor and in the attic. The left return features a round-arched first-floor window and a Venetian-style attic window. The cottages are included on the listing for their contribution to the group value of the surrounding buildings.
