Description
This is a former Congregational Church, built in 1857-59 and designed by Lockwood and Mawson of Bradford. It is accompanied by gate piers and gates. The church is constructed of ashlar, with a blue slate roof. It is two storeys high with a basement.
The monumental five-bay front facade is designed as a giant portico, set between vermiculated quoins and topped by a richly modelled pediment. Giant unfluted Corinthian columns rise from a shallow podium, with archivolted arches featuring large console keystones. Above the arches is a vermiculated frieze, with console brackets supporting the pediment. A roundel is set within the pediment, inscribed "GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST, AND ON EARTH PEACE, GOOD WILL TO ALL MEN," and is further supported by richly carved foliage. The back wall of the portico is rusticated to the ground floor and divided by a bracketted cornice. The ground floor features three round arched double doors, surrounded by vermiculated voussoirs (some blocked). Niches are located to the left and right, each with a Roman altar pedestal to support cast iron lamp standards. The first floor has slender round arched windows with a pilaster surround.
The side elevations each have nine bays and feature a boldly bracketted eaves cornice. Basement windows are plain, while ground floor windows are square headed with a shouldered architrave. First floor windows are round headed with archivolt and keystone. Windows in the bays flanking the portico are blind.
Inside, a horseshoe gallery has modelled panelling to the front, supported on slender, fluted cast iron columns with foliage capitals. Original box pews remain, and the ceiling has been lowered to gallery level.
In front of the church stand five squat, square ashlar gate piers, each with a cornice and square cap, and returned to the podium level. Cast iron gates feature dog rails and ornamental cresting.
