Description
The Midland Bank is a bank building dated 1890, designed by William Henry Howorth of Cleckheaton. It features an ashlar slate roof and stands two storeys tall, with a layout of four by five bays on a corner site, including a single corner bay. A moulded cornice separates the floors, and there is a moulded eaves cornice with a blocking course. Each end bay and the corner bay has a pedimented dormer with elaborate carving on the front and tympanum, topped with a large ball and stalk finial, one of which is dated 1890. The doorway is located at the corner bay and the last two bays to the right, which display raised letters stating: BANK, PRIVATE ENTRANCE, and BANK CHAMBERS. The ground floor windows are divided by pilasters, while the upper floor windows feature moulded architraves and scrolled pediments. The building occupies a prominent site in the town centre.
