Description

The Church of St John is a Gothic Revival church located in Cleckheaton. The west tower is the only remaining part of the Commissioners' Church built between 1830 and 1832 by Peter Atkinson Junior, while the chancel was added in 1864. The rest of the church was constructed from 1886 to 1888 by William Swindon Barber. It features hammer-dressed stone and a slate roof with gable copings.

The church has a west tower, a 5-bay nave with lean-to buttressed aisles, and a south porch. The chancel is 2 bays long and includes a vestry wing. The clerestory has triple lancets, and the aisles have paired lancets with stained glass. The chancel windows are 2-light with traceried heads and hood moulds, while the east window is a 5-light design with a large 8-foiled circle at the top. The tower is square with three tiers: the first tier has a west lancet and a south doorway, the second tier features two lancets and a blind clock face, and the third tier has paired louvred lancets. The first tier is supported by large angle buttresses, while the second and third tiers have slender clasping buttresses. A small parapet rests on moulded corbel brackets, and the tower originally had four slender pinnacles with conical tops.

Inside, the church is spacious with a 5-bay arcade on each side supported by short columns. The clerestory and aisle windows are adorned with detached colonnettes featuring foliated capitals. The chancel arch leads to a carved oak chancel screen from 1910, which displays the 12 Apostles at its base and a richly carved frieze of vines. The pulpit, also from 1910, is similarly carved, and there is a richly carved stone reredos depicting the Last Supper.
