Description
The Town Hall, built between 1890 and 1892 by Mawson & Hudson of Bradford, is designed in the English Free Style. It features an ashlar facade with return bays and a slate roof. The building has two storeys and attics at the front, while the side elevations rise to three storeys and a basement due to the sloping site.
At the front, there are gabled wings on both the left and right, with two central bays. One of these bays contains the entrance, which is accessed by a flight of stone steps flanked by a low wall with ornamental piers. The round arched doorway is adorned with ornate pilasters and an elaborately carved frieze. Above the entrance is a square clock tower with clock faces on three sides, a slated roof featuring round arched gabled dormer openings, and a copper domed lantern on top.
The left gabled wing includes a first-floor canted oriel bay with an Ipswich window, topped by a balcony with a round arched balustrade and a cartouche in the gable apex. The right wing has a shaped gable with ball and stalk finials, and paired round arched attic windows that lead to a balcony supported by two large console brackets. Both the ground and first-floor windows feature elaborately carved central panels above them.
The left return bay has a two-storey canted bay, while the right return bay includes a stepped staircase window and an Ipswich window on the first floor, which is topped by a Dutch gable. The right side elevation consists of eight bays of three-light chamfered mullioned windows, with the final bay surmounted by a Dutch gable.
