Description
The Church of St John, built in 1829, is a Grade II listed building designed in the Lancet style by Peter Atkinson Jnr and constructed by Joseph Kaye. An extension to the chancel was added in 1862. The church is built of ashlar and features a pitched slate roof with a gabled chancel and a south porch. The nave has lancet windows with diamond glazing, and the square west tower is topped with a broach spire that has short groups of louvred lancets in the bell chamber and lucarnes on all four sides.
Inside, the church has galleries supported on octagonal piers with panelled fronts made of Canadian pine. Notable interior features include a fine oak chancel screen from 1911, a pulpit from 1910, and a beautifully carved altar and reredos. The west end has a narthex separated by a panelled screen, and the east window is a stained glass piece dedicated in 1889.
