Description

1 and 3 Town End are an early to mid-18th century pair of weavers’ houses. They are built of hammer-dressed stone, painted to the west and south facing elevations, with a pitched stone slate roof and stone brackets to the gutter. There is a coped gable on moulded footstones. The houses are three storeys high. The east elevation has, on the ground floor, one 5-light and one 6-light stone mullioned window, alongside two entrances with stone surrounds. The first floor has four 3-light stone mullioned windows, one of which has a single light blocked. The second floor has a 9-light and a 10-light stone mullioned window. All east-facing windows have arched, rounded frames. The west elevation has two windows on the ground floor, one of which is blocked. The first floor has two 2-light stone mullioned windows and two windows with stone surrounds. The second floor has a 9-light stone mullioned window with three lights blocked, and a 5-light stone mullioned window that is completely blocked with three mullions removed. The south gable has a 2-light stone mullioned window to both the first and second floors. A large, modern, two-storey, flat-roofed extension in hammer-dressed stone to the south-east corner is not part of the listed building.
