Description

Spen Hall, together with its adjoining cottages, is a building with a complex history, likely originating in the 16th century, with significant development in the 17th, 19th, and mid-19th centuries. The earliest identifiable section comprises three cottages, which are constructed of rubble stone with quoins. They feature a gable wall with a five-light, ovolo-moulded, double-chamfered window on each floor. The cottage fronts are of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof, and contain three entrances (one of which has been altered from a window), along with two-light windows.

The main hall section is built of ashlar and has an eaves cornice and blocking course, topped with a stone slate roof. The entrance front is three bays wide, featuring a centrally positioned door with a pilaster surround and a small cornice, and single sash windows with aprons on the ground floor. The garden front has four bays and also contains single sash windows of the same style.
