Description
The Church of St Paul is a Commissioners' Church built between 1823 and 1825 by Thomas Taylor. It was altered in 1894 and restored in 1917 after a fire in 1916. The church is constructed of ashlar and features a pitched slate roof with roll top copings. It has a three-tier west tower and a seven-bay buttressed nave, which includes tall two-light windows adorned with Y tracery and hood moulds that have mask-like figure head stops. The small chancel has a four-light east window with intersecting tracery. The projecting three-tier tower is topped with a perforated parapet and tall octagonal pinnacles, and it includes two-light louvred openings in the bell chamber as well as a clock face on three elevations. The main arched entrance is located at the base of the tower on the west side.
Inside, the church has a very plain and light interior, with stained glass only in the east window. The nave windows are leaded, and there is a carved reredos along with a well-carved and panelled organ case situated in the north-east corner.
