Description

No. 51 Station Road is a former office and warehouse building dating from around 1880. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof. The building stands three storeys high with a basement and has a moulded string course between the first and second floors. It occupies a corner site with a seven-bay rounded facade, including a single gabled bay on the left that projects forward. This gabled bay has an open round-arched porch supported by red granite columns, which have intricately carved capitals depicting foliage and sheep's heads. The cornice above is richly carved with foliage, and the keystone features a carved bust.

The first floor has a paired window, while the second floor showcases a triple group of windows, all with pilaster surrounds and mullions topped with foliated capitals and round-arched heads. Above these windows is an elaborately carved frieze and cornice, and the gable pediment displays a shield held by two seated figures, topped by a squatting dog.

To the right, the six bays feature round-arched windows on the ground floor with nook shafted jambs and carved voussoirs. Each large keystone in this section is adorned with a carved animal or bird, including a monkey, owl, eagle, and macaw. The first floor windows are square-headed with a decorated frieze at the impost level, while the second floor has a continuous range of square-headed lights with an impost band. A decorative cornice is present above, leading to a perforated parapet.

Additionally, there is a round angle turret on the right side, extending to the first and second floors, with windows styled similarly to the gabled bay on the left. The turret features a conical roof with a richly carved underside, and a round-arched window below has a keystone carved with a bat. The right return elevation consists of three bays with a simpler design.
