Description
Zion United Reformed Church is a chapel built in 1802. It features rendered walls and a stone slate roof with a gable pediment and a moulded eaves cornice. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with five bays, extending three bays deep. To the left, there is a single-storey, three-bay wing at a right angle. The front elevation includes two six-panel doorways with an architrave frieze and cornice supported by carved consoles. The ground floor has tall round-headed windows, while the first floor has smaller segment-headed windows, all with glazing bars, although some are recent. An oculus with glazing bars is located in the tympanum. The right elevation features similar windows, while the single-storey wing has square-headed windows and a recent porch at the entrance. The rear elevation has four bays, an oculus in the tympanum, and two round-headed windows at an intermediate level. There is a recent brick fire.
Inside, the church has a gallery on three sides supported by very slender cast iron columns. There are three later brick piers on the right side. The interior includes box pews with doors and an impressive double-decker pulpit with panelled fronts and two slender colonnettes. An organ is situated at gallery level behind the pulpit.
