Description
The Church of St James the Great is a Gothic Revival church built in 1869, constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a slate roof that is bitumen-covered on the north side. The church features a four-bay buttressed nave, a lean-to north aisle, a south porch, and a bell-cote at the west end. The chancel consists of two bays. The south porch has a heavily moulded doorway, while the nave contains three-light windows, the chancel has two-light windows, and there is a five-light window on the east and a four-light window on the west, all showcasing Decorated tracery. The windows in the north aisle are arranged in triple groups, with cusped heads and hood moulds that have uncarved stops.
Inside, there is a four-bay arcade on the north side supported by short columns with foliated capitals. The interior is lined with brick, and the arches are made of moulded, painted brickwork. The chancel arch is heavily moulded and rests on clustered responds with corbel brackets. There is a carved oak chancel screen with a rood loft, and a square wooden pulpit adorned with stencilling on the sides and two painted panels on the front.
