Description

Thorncliffe Grange Farmhouse is a large house built soon after 1623 for Brice Allot. It features hammer dressed stone with quoins and a plinth, topped by a stone slate roof with gable copings on cut kneelers, and finials at the apexes and kneelers. The building is two storeys high and has a continuous drip mould at the ground floor. It has three gabled bays, with the outer wing projecting at the rear, creating a U-plan layout.

There is a single storey gabled porch located between the first and second bays, which has a later arched lintel above the doorway and a sundial in the apex. The inner door surround is chamfered, and it retains the original oak plank studded door. The windows are double chamfered, mostly rendered, and include mullions and transoms. The first floor has 8-light windows in each bay, plus a 2-light fire-window above the porch. The ground floor features windows with 10, 12, and 10 lights, with the central window having a king mullion. The rear windows consist of 8, 6, and 3 lights, with those on the right at intermediate levels.

The main entrance opens into a large fireplace, which has a moulded, arched surround in the centre bay, and to the left bay, there is a massive wooden lintel with a bread oven at the rear. Some modernisation has occurred. The parlour wing, located to the right, is oak panelled and features a central plastered beam and plaster cornice, along with an original oak door.
