Description

The Providence United Reformed Church, dated 1814, is a large hillside chapel prominently sited in Elland. It is built of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar trim. The front is a three-bay, pedimented gable of two storeys and a basement. The sides, necessitated by the hillside slope, are seven bays and three storeys high. The front has an ashlar plinth and sill bands, with a plain band defining the pediment. An ashlar date plaque is centrally placed. The first-floor windows are fan-glazed lunettes. The ground floor has two simple squared jamb windows and two squared jamb gallery staircase doors flanking the main entrance, which was emphasised in the 19th century with an ashlar pilastered frame, the cornice of the entablature forming a pediment above. The plain side elevations feature squared jamb windows to the lower and ground floors, with rounded heads on the top floor, and block brackets support the eaves cornice of the slate roof. The interior retains its original gallery, extended to encompass the organ and choir loft, supported by cast iron columns. Most fittings were renewed around 1880 in fine quality pine, including the 1886 organ. The ceiling remains unaltered, featuring a deeply and delicately modelled acanthus leaf rose vent at the centre. A wall tablet commemorates John Eblroyd of Stainland, dating to around 1819. Lower ground floor space accommodates a hall, Sunday School, and vestry rooms.
