Description

The barn at Ellistones Farm dates to the medieval period, with substantial alterations in the 17th century. It is constructed of dressed stone and hammer-dressed stone, with coped gables and kneelers, and has a modern corrugated iron roof. The barn is a large, double-aisled structure with opposed square-headed entrances and arch-headed ventilators to the gable. The front has a projecting gable to the aisle, featuring a chamfered door surround and a depressed Tudor-arched lintel, with a two-light chamfered mullioned window on either side. A four-tiered pigeon cote is set into the gable.

The interior is a double-aisled barn of five bays, featuring post-and-truss construction and a king-post roof, although all rafters have been replaced. Posts have finely out-arched braces to the tie-beam and arcade plate. Significant traces remain of a timber wall with diagonal struts, indicating a previous structure. The barn appears to have evolved from a single-aisled timber-framed barn, which was encased in stone in the mid-17th century, with a further aisle added to the farmhouse side and a gabled stable incorporated into the new aisle.
