Description
Well Royd is a mid-18th century home constructed from hammer-dressed stone, topped with a stone slate roof featuring coped gables and kneelers. The building has a double pile plan and a two-span roof with internal stacks at the gables. Its symmetrical front showcases projecting dressed quoins, window and door surrounds, and a decorative band.
The central doorway, which is two storeys high, is flanked by three-light flat-faced mullioned windows, with similar windows above. One mullion has been removed from each window, while the other has been repositioned centrally for casement windows. Above the door, there is a date plaque that reads 'RRM 1762', along with a tall window above it. The building features moulded gutter brackets.
The rear of the property retains its original fenestration, although it has been rendered. A long vertical staircase window, centrally placed, consists of six lights with mullions and transoms, featuring glazing bars of eight panes and six panes. On either side of this window, there are three-light flat-faced mullioned windows on both the ground and first floors, also with glazing bars of eight panes.
Inside, Well Royd boasts moulded plaster ceilings and arch-headed niches. One room at the rear includes shutters on the window and has an arched cellar beneath. Some large fielded paneling remains on the first-floor landing.
