Description

The Church of St Thomas, built in 1860 by T. Rushforth, is a Gothic revival structure located on the north side of Elland Rochdale Road. It features a nave, chancel, south transept chapel, and a west tower, constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a steep slate roof. The windows display geometric tracery, with paired windows in the nave, an east window comprising three lights, and a transept window with four lights. The tower, which is unbuttressed and consists of three stages, is topped with four squat pinnacles and has belfry windows with two louvred lights.

Inside, the church has a four-bay arcade supported by early French Gothic capitals. The south aisle features a lean-to roof and is illuminated by triple circular windows, each with three lobes. An arch leading to the transept chapel is now blocked at the lower level by an organ. The chancel includes a north aisle that forms a chapel, accessible through two arches with pierced tympana. There is sedilia beneath a round arch, and the east window is adorned with marble shafts that have rings, as does the chancel arch. The stained glass in this window depicts the crucifixion, and the open roof features arch-braced trusses that spring from carved corbels.

Furnishings include a pulpit with stubby shafts made of different marbles and choir stalls with round arched arcading sourced from St. John, West Vale.
