Description

Lower Ellistones Mill is a late 18th-century woollen mill, now derelict. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof and quoins. It is three storeys high. The ground floor has been altered, but retains a doorway and windows, alongside stables which feature cast iron stalls. The first floor has flat-faced stone mullioned windows of 4, 2, 2, and 4 lights. The second floor has two 4-light windows. On the left-hand return is a stone staircase leading to an entry, with a taking-in door above. The interior consists of large, single rooms, each with a fireplace at one end. The mill represents an important survival relating to the early handloom weaving industry.
