Description
The Church of All Saints, built in 1896 by G. H. Fellowes Prynne, is a Grade II* listed building located on Savile Road in Elland. Constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a tiled roof, it features a tall nave and chancel under a continuous roof, with low lean-to aisles, a western baptistry, and gabled transeptal chapels, the northern of which has an apse. A wooden fleche topped with a copper spire adds to its Gothic revival style, which includes mostly lancet windows. The west front showcases three tall lancets separated and flanked by gabled buttresses. The transeptal chapels are adorned with small rose windows in their western gables and triple lancets on the side walls, while the southern chapel includes a stair turret. The baptistry is also embattled, and a foundation stone dated 1900 is located at the east end.
Inside, the church features a stone and brick interior with a five-bay nave and a tunnel roof supported by transverse ribs on engaged colonnettes. The tall chancel arch is flanked by four large polychrome figures of saints on each side. The chancel consists of two bays with a similar roof, and the nave arcades extend into the transeptal chapels. The north chapel contains a small two-bay sanctuary.
Furnishings include a stone chancel screen with cresting and wrought iron and beaten copper gates, an elaborate late Gothic reredos from around 1920, and a stained glass east window from the same period depicting the Church Triumphant. The church also features a finely carved wooden pulpit with a quatrefoil plan on an openwork base and a beautifully carved 17th-century altar table from St. Mary's Church.
