Description
Bethesda Methodist Church is a Methodist chapel built between 1879 and 1880, designed by William Hill of Leeds. The building features coursed rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, showcasing a Gothic Revival style. It has a chamfered plinth, a first-floor sill band, and an eaves band.
The west front includes a central entrance with a deeply moulded round arch supported by columns, flanked by a pair of pointed arch doorways with carved tympanums and plank doors. Above the entrance is a central column and a glazed quatrefoil. On either side are single lancets, and above is a four-light wheel window in a pointed arch surround, flanked by single lancets with continuous hood moulds. The gable features three tiny lancets, and square pilasters on either side rise to form small turrets topped with elaborate pyramidal spires.
The north street front is two storeys high with seven windows. To the right is a gabled stair projection with an upper three-light pointed arch window featuring circular tracery. To the left are five flat-headed mullion windows arranged in a pattern of 2:3:2:3:2, separated by chamfered buttresses. Above, a similar arrangement continues, with three-light windows extending upwards to form gabled through eaves dormers, each with a wheel window. To the left is a two plank door, with a stepped three-light window above that extends to form a gabled through eaves dormer. The east front has a single circular window with petal lights, while the south front mirrors the north front.
Inside, the church retains nearly all of its original fittings, including pews and a gallery on three sides supported by slender iron columns. There is an elaborate wooden reading desk and an organ loft gallery behind, featuring a later organ. The interior is topped by an elaborate open wooden roof, also supported on slender iron columns.
