Description
This is a row of three shops at 3, 5, and 7 Southgate, Elland, built in the early Victorian period. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof. It stands three stories high and consists of three bays. The ground floor has been modernized with shop fronts, separated by rusticated piers. A string course and sill band mark the second floor, and a dentil cornice and blocking course run along the top. Rusticated quoins accentuate the corners. The arrangement is symmetrical, with triple windows on each floor of each bay. The first-floor windows feature mullions in the form of Ionic half-columns which support a full entablature and a pediment above the central window; this pediment is segmental in the central bay and triangular in the outer bays. The second-floor windows are cambered, with keystones and shouldered architraves. A raised panel connects the central windows of each floor, creating volutes around the window on the second floor.
